Atmospheric Secondary Cosmic Ray data computed with AtRIS

Dataset used in: "Impact of Atmospheric Profile Variability on Simulated Secondary Cosmic Ray Fluxes Using AtRIS".

AtRIS is a GEANT4 based toolkit that simulates the propagation of energetic particles through planetary atmospheres [1]. In this case, we used AtRIS to investigate the flux of SCRs in the atmosphere of the Earth. To this end, we rely on the NRLMSIS 2.1 model of the atmosphere [2].

This dataset contains the processed secondary cosmic ray (SCR) data in Earth's atmosphere simulated with the Atmospheric Radiation Interaction Simulator (AtRIS).

Each files in this dataset share the same structure (which is explained in detail in each file description).

  • stat_error_run_x_primary_protons: Those files were used to asses the statistical error of the model.
  • february_xx_primary_protons: Those files were used to compare the different SCR fluxes at various latitudes in February (01- 02- 2025). 0N: Equator, 80N: 80° North, 80S: 80° South.
  • august_xx_primary_protons: Those files were used to compare the different SCR fluxes at various latitudes in August (01- 02- 2025). 0N: Equator, 80N: 80° North, 80S: 80° South.

The histograms in the files are the non normalized histograms described in the "Good Practice Guide for the simulation and estimation of particle fluxes during minimum solar activity, maximum solar activity and the recent Solar Energetic Particle Events" [3]. The simulated_primary_number provides the normalization factor for each primary energy bins.

Note: The simplest way to use those files is by using the python xarray library.
